Schuss Alpine Club 50th Anniversary Celebration

THE MCG might be accustomed to hosting big events, but it’s surely never taken on anything this big. On the night of Saturday 30 March, the world’s greatest stadium will play host to the world’s greatest alpine club, Schuss, as members, families and friends gather high above the turf to mark the 50th anniversary of our club and the opening of its Mt Buller lodge in the winter of 1969.

It will be a grand setting for a grand occasion, and seats are likely to be in hot demand – if the large crowds lining up for tickets (right) are anything to go by. And in a late and quite unexpected development, the great man who founded our club back in 1969, Wieland von Behrens, has confirmed he will be flying out from his home in Seattle with his son Mark to join in a panel discussion on the night with other legends of our club, including Trevor Pozza and Brian Angus

All the dinner and Schuss AGM action will take place in the Harrison Room, which has commanding views over the arena from level 2 of the Ponsford Stand. This will be a far cry – and indeed some distance – from our usual Melbourne AGM venue, the humble German Club Tivoli on Dandenong Road, Prahran. The board decided that a special occasion was warranted for this year’s AGM as we mark 50 years since the launch of our club at Schuss Lodge Mt Buller. There will be a two-course dinner for $100 (see booking details below) drinks at bar prices, and the panel discussion involving club legends sharing memories and anecdotes about our great club.

We will also be preparing a photo gallery featuring great moments in the history of our three lodges. To this end, we would be grateful if you could send any images of life around the lodges down through the decades that you reckon might enhance the gallery. Please forward your best images to – and thanks to those who have already done so.

Dinner on the night is not compulsory; those who just wish to attend the AGM (at 7pm) can do so free of charge. They may also join Schuss directors for a pre-AGM drink at the bar from 6.30pm. Dinner will be held after the AGM. Anyone with special dietary requirements should inform club secretary Susie Anderson in advance, email For security and catering purposes, the MCG requires the names of all those attending.
